S.M.A.R.T. - O.F. : Part 5, Time Bound, 3 Ways!
In part 5 of our series we look at the Time Bound step. Most folks are pretty comfortable applying timelines to their goals, but remember, we’re looking to optimize for your success, so let’s apply Time Bound in 3 key ways!
Ensure you’ve got a clear start and end date. On what day are you beginning this goal attainment journey, and on what day do you expect the goal to be reached? This makes your goal time bound. And let’s go one step further.
It is not enough to have an end date. This only gives you a ‘pass or fail’ outcome. That is, did you achieve the goal or not. This is not optimized for your success. What you really want are check points along the way so that you can give yourself time to correct the path if something isn’t going according to plan. That is, if your overall time frame is 6 months, set a check in date once per month where you can reflect on progress. Also add to these once per month check ins, where you expect to be at each point. If you’re not yet there upon check in, you can correct your efforts to keep you on track.
Finally, this is even more specific and helps support your day-to-day consistency. Ensure the steps you are to take daily toward your goal, are also time bound. Meaning BY what time of day or AT what time of day will you take that step. This will help you stay more accountable on a daily basis, which is a difference-maker in the pursuit of longer term goals.
